Injury and Illness Prevention Plan
In California, all employers are required to have a written Injury and Illness Prevention Plan to ensure a healthful and safe workplace. An effective IIPP will reduce or eliminate injuries and illness by anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling hazards in the workplace before an accident or injury occur. The IIPP should be a living document and must be reviewed on an annual basis to ensure that it is reflective of the processes and tasks that are conducted in the workplace. However, in some instances, it could be necessary to update the IIPP even more often if there are changes or unforeseen events.
Having an effective IIPP has the potential to save the employer money by reducing the time lost from an employee who is unable to perform their work, loss of productivity from employees helping with investigating an incident, and reduced morale among other employees stemming from an unsafe workplace.
The IIPP must be tailored to the workplace so that existing or potential hazards are controlled or eliminated. This also includes employee training, communication, and commitment from management.
